Aledo ISD announced today it is nearing completion of a $36.5 million elementary school located on FM 5 just south of I-20 on the southwest side of the district. The 107,391 square foot facility is a two-story split level which will house 800 students and includes a state-required storm shelter.

“With some of the challenges this project presented, the design and construction team on Annetta Elementary did an excellent job of problem solving to get this project to completion,” said Tyler Boswell, Director of Construction and Facilities for Aledo ISD. “Annetta Elementary is a campus our community will be proud of, and we cannot wait to see the next generation of proud Bearcats enjoying this incredible building.”

Dunaway performed structural engineering services for the project.

“We were thrilled to be part of this project and bring a new school to this growing district in record time,” said Russell Ransbarger, PE, Senior Discipline Lead for Dunaway. “One of the most interesting aspects of this project was that the site had a tremendous amount of slope. Our team recommended a 14-foot retaining wall in the middle of the structure so the second floor lines up with first. The concrete storm shelter also added another layer of complexity to the structural design. However, we were able to navigate these difficulties under budget and on time.”

The school will serve Kindergarten through fifth grade and is the sixth elementary school in the district. The project features grade-level pods with collaborative learning spaces and an open library with reading nooks and natural light that overlooks an interior outdoor learning hub.

Roadway improvements and water/wastewater infrastructure for FM 5 is included in the cost of the overall project. TxDOT is widening the portion of FM 5 near the school to help traffic flow around the campus, especially during morning drop off and afternoon pickup times.

Annetta Elementary School is on schedule to open this August in time for the fall 2021 semester. A grand opening event will be announced at a later date.
