COOK CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER

Cook Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) began nearly 100 years ago as a charitable hospital for newborns and has grown into a comprehensive pediatric health care system that is rooted in the organization’s state-of-the-art pediatric medical campus in Fort Worth. Dunaway has a long-standing relationship with CCMC, providing a full range of engineering, landscape architecture and survey services for multiple expansion and renovation projects located at the main campus in Fort Worth and in community clinics throughout Tarrant County.

Among Dunaway’s projects for CCMC is the redevelopment of the main campus, including a 500,000 square feet, 428-bed expansion to the North Tower, a 250,000 square feet medical office building, an 118,000 square feet professional office building and a traffic roundabout. Dunaway used Building Information Modeling (BIM) on the project, as well as AutoCAD Civil 3D to design utilities. Autodesk Navisworks software was used to integrate the various software platforms and models provided by other team members.

Dunaway’s Planning + Landscape Architecture Group completed design on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Courtyard Sculpture Garden, an exterior roof garden that can be viewed from inside the hospital. A total of 80 pieces were installed to give the illusion of a meadow pond teaming with aquatic creatures. The garden features lively and colorful giant flowers sculpted from metal, artificial turf, a glistening stream made from blue glass, and other garden features. The sculptures were placed on a rubber membrane roof, with custom base plates made to hold each piece in place without puncturing the surface. The sculpture bases were hidden under synthetic turf and blue glass. Dunaway incorporated the existing roof structure in the project while accommodating drainage needs.
